The Sky TV (UK) and DSTV (Nigeria and South Africa) are glorified IPTVs It is noteworthy that SKY TV UK is only just now offering VOD!!!

IP denotes that it is an internet – based TV. It is no longer tenable, rather the term sticks because it is now essentially a server- client based service where the server allocates a particular IP address to the client.

How does it work?

Like a typical computer network setup, there is the video server and the client – workstation, usually a set top box that is coupled to a TV
The video server streams data – video etc to the client.
The client equipment invariably is a set- top box or device that connects to a standard TV.

The server is configured to stream stored video (VOD or Video on Demand), broadcasts from other TV stations e.g BBC or CNN etc

Our own typical setup is such that it can be scaled up or down to suit user’s needs.
Also, there is no need for a dedicated set top box as users can also watch on their laptops or tablet computers
This is especially of immense value in a typical academic environment where students are able to watch pre- recorded academic materials, other television stations as well as other entertainment videos.
